November 9, 2011 Give to the Max Day
Give to the Max Day: Greater Washington is a one-day fundraising event on November 9, 2011 that will unite local Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC communities to support nonprofits serving the area. The goal is to get tens of thousands of people to support their favorite nonprofit or cause, raising more than $3 million in donations and grants in just 24 hours!

Hundreds of area nonprofits will compete for cash awards and matching grants offered throughout the day. Mutt Love Rescue will be participating in this exciting event!
Every donation you make gives Mutt Love Rescue the chance to win even more money. Please consider giving something on November 9th! Every $1 counts!

Justice got his.....
This week's highlight is Justice! He got his chance when Mutt Love Rescue rescued him at the last minute!
It is a sad thought to think of what might have happened to Justice had Mutt Love not stepped in to save him. Justice was pulled from the euthanasia room at the last minute .... He came from a shelter where his breed does not usually walk out alive. He was a staff favorite and they did everything they could to make sure he survived because he was so sweet. He was an owner surrender in a county where his breed is banned and when he was taken to the shelter, they were told he was hit by a car. The shelter did not believe the story so it hard to say what really happened to his leg. Justice is a wonderful and sweet, fun loving young dog. He loves everyone he meets and gets along well with other dogs. He is a lover and a cuddler, though he does have a lot of puppy energy - being about 7 or 8 months. Justice had the surgery he needed on his leg and once his recovery period is over, he will be as good as new.

Fireworks Frighten Some of our Furry Friends!
There's a short and helpful article on Dogster that provides some tips for comforting our frightened furry friends when loud fireworks erupt throughout the night! Check it out:
Tips from the Dogster webite
Beware of fireworks. Fireworks are no blast for some pets, with many dogs becoming easily frightened by their deafening roar. The best option is to leave your dog indoors (not leashed in the yard) during the holiday weekend in a safe, secure, escape-proof room of the house with comfy bed, food and water. Also consider leaving a TV or radio on to drown out the sound of the fireworks and to provide familiar noises while you’re out.
Give them a den. Provide anxiety-prone pets give a crate to hide in, if they’re already crate trained. Cover this den with a towel for added security.
Be a comfort. Speak calmly to your dog and offer soft massage. TLC goes a long way in easing anxiety. Some dogs also get less anxious when they can have treats, but don’t overdo it.
Confirm your pet’s collar and I.D. information. Dogs can become easily frightened by loud celebrations on the 4th of July. Make sure yours is wearing a properly fitted collar with correct identification and tags just in case he or she becomes scared and runs away from home. Micro-chipping also is a great precaution to make it easier for your pooch to be returned home safely and promptly.
Be careful with 4th of July decorations. Remember that your pet may easily mistake your red, white and blue decorations and glow sticks as chew toys. Make sure to pet-proof your home and keep fun decorations out of paw’s reach.
Think about a vet visit. If you know that your dog is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.

Kudos to our supporters!
Mutt Love Rescue's Summer Silent Auction Event brought in nearly $10,000 in much needed funds! Through generous donations, raffle ticket sales and auction item sales, Mutt Love Rescue can report that 100% of this money will go directly to recent surgeries for a couple of our dogs, medical care, boarding and rescue of the Mutts dogs waiting for their forever homes.
It was an amazing day full of good company, tasty food, and free flowing wine, beer and sodas! The auction team would like to thank the gracious hosts, Valerie and Joe for opening their lovely home for this event. With precise teamwork, Kim, George and Katherine pulled off an auction of over 100 generously donated items. Most important, this money would not be possible without the generous donations from you, our supporters, friends, and family.
Our Mutts Store also made over $200 in tshirt sales, thanks to Julie S for her help selling logo items. If you don't have your Mutts shirts, we have received more XL, 2XL, and 3XL shirts, so stop by the next adoption event to get your shirt, for $20.
The Apple iPad2 winner was Vicky M. and the Amazon Kindle winner was Dan R. We have several winners who also claimed their 3rd place dog treat boxes. Congratulation! Thank you to everyone for their support by purchasing and selling tickets!
If did not get a chance to attend this summer auction, please watch for details on the 2011 Holiday Party & Silent Auction in December! To pull off a large fundraiser like this, takes lots of man/woman power, so if you are interested in helping with the 2011 Holiday Party, please contact me by replying to this email.

OverWeight Pet...it's a national concern
Saw this great article in CNN Living, thought it might be a good way to start looking at various ways to exercise my dog! Do you have concerns about your pet's weight? Check this out:
CNN Living on Overweight Pets
Here are some ideas that I will use to exercise my dog:
CNN Living on Overweight Pets
Here are some ideas that I will use to exercise my dog:
- Focus on play time: Don't just roll around on the carpet with your cat. Take about 20 minutes for some intense playtime. All you need is a flashlight, and perhaps some disco tunes.
- Embrace the thrill of the hunt: Try a good chase around the house. "If you have a two-story house, start on the bottom floor and make them run up the stairs," Monroe says.
- Interactive toys: Add low-calorie treats to slow-release or interactive toys. This makes your cat or dog work for its food. (The horror!)
- Get crafty: Cat towers can help cats get moving.
- Step outside: For owners with limited mobility, slingshot toys provide an extra boost to outdoor games of fetch with the dog. Some toys even have slots for treats so that portly pups stay motivated.
- Hit the pavement: Walking on a flat surface provides good, low-impact exercise for overweight dogs and people. Just be mindful of when your dog has had enough. Excessive panting may be a sign of overexposure.

How will you spend a rainy Saturday?
Weatherman says 90% chance of rain on Saturday! Come and spend a nice rainy afternoon with some amazing dogs and volunteers. Dogs still need forever homes, so please join us on Saturday, April 16th from 12noon to 3:00 pm, at the Petco in Fairfax.
We are in need of handlers for our dogs! They come out to meet prospective owners but they can't come out of their cages if we have no handlers. All it takes is a love for dogs and the willingness to learn about the dog you are handling.

How does your dog feel when you leave for vacation?
Sharing some thoughts after coming back from a short trip:
Coming back from 5 days of touring the historic city of Boston, drinking beers with names that I can't pronounce, and trying a different New England Clam Chowder each day, I am relieved to come back and spend time with our dog! He's a rescue who found his forever home with us, almost 4 years ago, thanks to the compassionate volunteers of this group!
So, the thought of the day: Where do you board your dog when you are away? Does your dog know that they are not with their pack? What about dogs without forever homes, do they think about whether they will belong to a forever pack? Please consider fostering or adopting so that these dogs will sleep better at night knowing that they belong to a pack.
Here's a picture of our dog, sent by his sitter. The quote was 'lucky for the ledge'...because he spends days and nights sitting there. He's actually watching the neighbor dogs, but we think he's waiting for us to pick him up!

Why fostering helps to save more dogs....
As a newly formed all volunteer dog rescue group, we are always looking for volunteers! One area of utmost importance is the role of the 'foster' parent or 'foster family'. It's a great way to help us defray boarding costs and it's a great way to ease the dog into a loving home. The added benefit to you is the unconditional love you'll receive from one of these loving animals. It's a win win situation for all. Here's some information from the Mutt Love Rescue website. This will help you understand what it takes to be a foster parent.
It takes a special person to be a foster parent. Whether you foster tiny puppies, an adult dog, or an elderly, sick or abused dog, they all need the TLC that only a foster parent can provide. The care received in the comfort of your home can get the dogs back on track and boost their chances of being placed in a loving permanent home faster.
The length of commitment varies; some dogs require a few days or weeks, some require several months. The dogs taken into our program do not have a time limit, they are safe until a permanent home is found. If you are unable to foster for an indefinite time period, we often have a need for temporary fosters.
If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, there are only a few steps to take.
